The publication Revealing Invisible Times: Alexandre da Cunha and Francisca AAninat, edited by Valentina Gajardo, accompanies the eponymous exhibition presented at the Heong Gallery, Downing College, Cambridge, from September 10 to October 19, 2025. Published by Downing College, the volume brings together texts by Rachel Coombs, Valentina Gajardo, Mara Polgovsky, Mateus Nunes, Francisca Aninat and Lorna Dillon, articulating different perspectives on the practices of the two artists and on the relationships between materiality, time, labor, and memory activated by the exhibition.
Mateus Nunes’s text, Kentucky Fried Chicken, focuses on Alexandre da Cunha’s practice and, in particular, on the Kentucky series presented in the exhibition. Taking the double meaning of “Kentucky” as a reference to both the fast-food chain and the US state, the essay traces a chain of associations linking cuisine, racism, material culture, poultry shows, ornamental patterns, and cleaning implements, with cotton mop heads serving as a point of convergence between different historical and aesthetic regimes. Nunes reads the displacement of ordinary materials into the field of sculpture as an operation of transposition and reclassification, through which patterns, names, objects, and systems of value migrate between the domestic, industrial, popular-cultural, and art-historical spheres. In discussing works such as Kentucky (Partridge), Kentucky (Pied de Poule I), Vortex (Brown Eye), and Kentucky (Biombo), the text emphasizes the way da Cunha constructs systems of rules only to destabilize them, dissolving disciplinary boundaries and allowing objects and historical references to acquire new genealogies. The essay culminates in the idea that his works “reveal invisible times” by unraveling and reweaving canons, materials, and histories, making sculpture itself a site of transgression and historical rewriting.
