The publication features a text by Mateus Nunes, devoted to the works from the You Text Nothing Like You Look series presented in the eponymous exhibition, and a text by Felipe Cordeiro, which discusses other works by Lucas Simões related to books and literature. The graphic design is by Rafael Simões. The book was launched in February 2025 and is based on Simões’s solo exhibition held at the Biblioteca Mário de Andrade in São Paulo, from November 9, 2024, to February 2, 2025.
Mateus Nunes’s text approaches the dialogue between sculpture and literature as a system of translations, displacements, and ricochets, reading the works presented at the Biblioteca as situations in which matter and language are continually reorganized. The essay connects this procedure to the cadavre exquis, the Surrealist game based on chance, automatic writing, and the unpredictable combination of fragments, relating it to the way Simões works from literary excerpts in their original languages and, once each sculpture is completed, adds a second quotation in another language to its title. Nunes thus proposes a reading of sculpture as language, in which materials, forms, and spatial relations assume functions analogous to those of grammatical elements, while Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, and English are themselves subjected to material pressure. The text also follows Simões’s openness to unpredictability and to the responses of the materials themselves, examining how, through the friction between word and object, sculpture can acquire a kind of linguistic autonomy while remaining permeable to discourse.
