The publication was produced on the occasion of Thiago Martins de Melo’s eponymous solo exhibition, presented between August and October 2025 at the Convento das Mercês and Chão SLZ, in the historic center of São Luís. Organized by Germano Dushá, the exhibition brought together 21 works produced between 2013 and 2025, spanning painting, sculpture, video, and installation. Rather than simply documenting the exhibition, the book extends its experience through photographs of the exhibition, reproductions and entries on the works, an expanded version of the curatorial text, an interview between Ariana Nuala and the artist, and new digital creations by Martins de Melo.
In Woe, Wayfork, Witching: an apocryphal liturgy for Thiago Martins de Melo, Mateus Nunes structures his essay as a seven-part, first-person journey through the cosmological, territorial, and historical worlds activated by the artist’s work. Moving between muddy waters, forests, bodies, ancestral presences, ritual objects, and visions of violence and ruin, the text brings Indigenous, Afro-Brazilian, religious, and colonial imaginaries into deliberate friction. Each section is paired with a work by Martins de Melo, allowing the prose to oscillate between visual interpretation and fabulation, while references to the great serpent, Exu, the tarot, and Werner Herzog’s Fitzcarraldo connect different mythologies, histories, and forms of transformation. The notion of an “apocryphal liturgy” frames this movement as an intentionally ritualistic mode of criticism, in which the body, language, and imagination become vehicles for entering the unstable, syncretic terrain of the artist’s practice.
